Working with the Earth: Greener Solutions for Tomorrow with Maccaferri

Can engineering protect the planet? At Maccaferri, it already does. This Earth Day, explore how our projects across Indonesia are blending innovation with nature—proving that sustainable infrastructure isn’t just possible, it’s the future.

Working with the Earth: Greener Solutions for Tomorrow with Maccaferri

Earth Day is an important reminder that we all have a role in protecting this planet. In the midst of climate change and environmental challenges, every small action and every innovative solution can be the beginning of a big change.

Maccaferri believes that a sustainable future is not just a discourse; it is something we are building today, together. By combining advanced engineering technology with a spirit of environmental preservation, we deliver real solutions across various infrastructure projects in Indonesia. Here are three inspiring projects that show how modern development can go hand in hand with nature:

1. PLN Ampel: Slope Stabilization for Reliable Energy Distribution

The Problem:
Landslides in PLN substation areas not only endanger infrastructure, but they also threaten the community’s electricity supply.

The Solution:
In the PLN Ampel project, Maccaferri introduced the innovative Paramesh retaining wall system, specially designed to strengthen landslide-prone slopes. A 200-meter stretch of slope was reinforced with a layered system:

  • Terramesh System for the outer layer,
  • ParaLink 300 geogrid for internal reinforcement
  • MacTex for soil filtration and separation

Sustainable Impact:
This system not only minimizes the risk of landslides but also reduces construction waste and carbon footprint. A fast, strong, and environmentally friendly solution because maintaining electricity reliability also means safeguarding lives.

2. Post-Earthquake Cianjur: Recovery with Landslide Mitigation and Erosion Control

The Problem:
The 2022 Cianjur earthquake caused major landslides, destroying road access and separating communities.

The Solution:
Maccaferri combined Retaining Wall technology with erosion control systems that blend with nature:

  • Terramesh for retaining walls
  • MacMat HS reinforced with steel wire for slope protection
  • Seed mulch on top of MacMat HS to grow natural vegetation

Sustainable Impact:
We supported a fast yet long-lasting recovery process without harming the environment. Vegetation regrew, slopes stabilized, and communities reconnected which is a true example of harmony between engineering and ecology.

3. Aston Anyer: Eco-Friendly Breakwater for Coastal Protection

The Problem:
The coastline was continuously eroded by strong waves, threatening property and guest comfort at the hotel.

The Solution:
Maccaferri built a Breakwater structure using PoliMac® Gabions—anti-corrosion coated steel wire filled with rocks, arranged offshore to naturally dissipate wave energy.

Sustainable Impact:
This structure is flexible, durable, and naturally blends with the coastal ecosystem. It not only protects the beach but also creates new habitats for marine life.

Sustainability Is Not a Choice. It’s a Standard.

From mountain slopes to coastlines, from land to sea, we continue to innovate to create civil engineering solutions that are strong and environmentally friendly. Let us keep moving forward together, building a future where engineering and nature walk side by side.
