Blanket Thickness Reduction at Gadarwara, Madhya Pradesh

Maccaferri geosynthetic solutions were used to reduce the blanket thickness at Gadarwara.

Maccaferri’s MacGrid® EG and MacTex® N was installed to reduce the blanket thickness at Gadarwara plant in Madhya Pradesh.

NTPC Limited, India’s largest thermal power utility, developed a dedicated railway siding line to streamline coal transportation to its Gadarwara plant in Madhya Pradesh. The major challenge during the construction of this railway line was the presence of poor subgrade conditions and the limited availability of blanket material. Additionally, an existing operational railway line had to be crossed each time blanket material was transported, making logistics time-consuming and inefficient. These constraints demanded a value-engineered solution that could ensure high performance and cost-effectiveness while reducing material usage and construction time.

Maccaferri’s geosynthetic solution was adopted using MacGrid® EG (biaxial polypropylene geogrid) and MacTex® N (nonwoven geotextile) to improve trackbed performance. This sustainable approach enabled a reduction in blanket thickness from 1 meter to 0.4 meters, significantly cutting down material usage and construction time. Additionally, it enhanced the bearing capacity of the blanket layer, ensuring long-term performance under heavy loading conditions.
