EMBANKMENT REINFORCEMENT AT BENTONG, PAHANG, MALAYSIA
Problem
A road passing through hilly terrain crossed over the confluence of two hills where a stream passed through the ravine. The road was washed away during heavy downpour and the Government had to reconnect the road to its original route.
Solution
They had two options to decide upon; to build a bridge across or to rejoin the road and use the Terramesh System to reinforce the embankment of the road. The choice was clear as the cost of the latter was only 35% of the former. The Terramesh System was also chosen because of the flexibility and permeability of the structure. Having prepared a foundation platform, CMP pipe was installed first to drain the spring water away so as to obtain a drier work place for installing the Terramesh. Once the pipes are installed, a reinforced soil retaining structure was build to provide a new foundation for the road embankment. Upon completion of earthworks, the exposed embankment side slopes were either sodden or grass seeded.
