SLOPE REINSTATEMENT AT KUANTAN, PAHANG, MALAYSIA
Problem
Federal Road No. 1581 is constantly pounded by heavy vehicles heading to / from a nearby cement factory. During a heavy downpour in late December 2003, four slopes collapsed, two of which resulted in fractured culverts. Weakened soil was not able to distribute the load evenly and thus with continued pressure from heavy vehicles, the foundation gave way.
Solution
The slopes were reinstated using a combination of three products. Firstly, Terramesh – Mechanically Stabilize Earth Wall was used at the bottom so that it can be constructed vertically and is flexible enough to be arranged around culverts. Additionally, Terramesh is a free draining structure and hence excess water flow from culverts can be easily drained out. The top structure was completed with Green Terramesh and Enkamat to provide a sturdy yet environmentally friendly front face. This solution was able to overcome further soil erosion and provide a strong base for that stretch of road to continue its safe function to road users.
