Rockfall Mitigation Along Wright-Taft-Borongan Road, Eastern Samar

To protect motorists and road users, a critical project along Wright-Taft-Borongan Road focused on advanced rockfall protection measures has been implemented. These initiatives stabilized the slopes and prevented hazards, ensuring the safety of one of Eastern Samar's key transportation routes.

Eastern Samar’s Wright-Taft-Borongan Road is a vital transportation artery that connects communities and supports regional economic growth. However, steep, exposed slopes and frequent rockfall incidents posed significant challenges to the road’s safety and reliability. In response, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Eastern Samar District Engineering Office initiated a critical project to address these risks and ensure safer travel.

The Challenges: Steep Slopes and Rockfall Risks

The combination of natural topography and road widening efforts left the roadside slopes unsupported, increasing the likelihood of falling debris. Steep, unstable slopes heightened the risk of rockfall, threatening motorists and nearby communities. Immediate action was required to safeguard both the transportation infrastructure and the lives of its users.

Comprehensive Solutions for Long-Term Safety

To mitigate these risks, the DPWH implemented a holistic approach that combined slope excavation with advanced protection systems. These efforts emphasized long-term stability and safety:

  • Excavation and Slope Reshaping: Steep roadside slopes were excavated and reshaped to reduce the risk of natural rock detachment.
  • Active Rockfall Protection System: High-strength systems were installed to stabilize the slopes and prevent debris from reaching the road.

The project adhered to international standards, reflecting DPWH’s dedication to safety, innovation, and sustainability.

A Safer Future for Eastern Samar

Launched in August 2023 and completed in May 2024, these projects significantly enhanced the safety and resilience of Wright-Taft-Borongan Road. By integrating engineering expertise with sustainable practices, the initiative provided a model for infrastructure development that protected both people and the environment.

With the improvements successfully implemented, motorists and communities now benefit from safer, more reliable travel along one of Eastern Samar’s most crucial routes.
