Problem

Tacloban City, the capital of Leyte in Eastern Visayas, Philippines, has faced significant challenges with its access roads, leading to accidents, inconveniences for commuters, and hindering the city’s potential for growth and development. The Tigbao – Sta. Fe – San Miguel Road, a crucial route, has experienced issues such as road slips, slope collapses, and landslides, making it unsafe and unreliable for motorists. These challenges not only posed threats to public safety but also limited the city’s connectivity with neighboring areas, hindering economic and social progress.

Solution

To address challenges faced by Tacloban City’s access roads, Maccaferri Philippines collaborated with the Department of Public Works and Highways in a comprehensive project. The goal was to transform the Tigbao – Sta. Fe – San Miguel Road into a safer and more reliable route.

The downgrading construction of the steep road began in December 2020, reducing the elevation by over 60 meters. Exposed slopes became susceptible to rockfalls, landslides, and road slips, posing challenges amid rugged terrain, debris, and unique configurations.

Rigorous testing in the Philippines and Singapore validated materials for quality and efficiency. By December 2022, the installation of rockfall netting and slope protection was in full swing, marking a significant step toward a secure road network. The construction, progressing in six phases, targets completion in 2024, symbolizing progress, safety, and a brighter future for Tacloban City.
